An ambitious project
This reform, adopted by the Mayor of Paris at the time, Bertrand Delanoë, is an ambitious project for the museums. It strengthens the strategic development of the network, optimizes its management and benefits from a significant financial contribution from the City to continue the renovation of buildings and improve the functioning of museums.
The priorities set by the City for this new public institution are as follows:
- The enhancement of municipal collections through computerization and digitization of the works, development of research, the programming of events and multiple showings of works, aimed at raising awareness of the City’s collections and bringing them to the public, with free admission since 2001.
- The programming of exhibitions and production of publications of high editorial quality, enhancing the cultural richness of the capital and its national and international repute.
- The development and expansion of museum audiences through stronger educational policies and greater attention to the comfort of visitors and to cultural mediation (the quality of the visitor’s encounter with the work). Today, the City of Paris museums attract nearly three million visitors. The objective is to consolidate this trend and to contribute to promoting even wider access to culture.
